Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large loaf brioche bread (or challah bread or similar), cut into 12 thick slices
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk of your choice (I used vanilla almond milk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ounces whipped cream cheese (I used reduced fat)
  • 1/4 cup fruit jam or jelly
  • 3 cups fresh mixed berries (I used strawberries and blueberries)
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (for topping), optional
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a baking dish and arrange half of the bread slices in a single layer.
  • Spread cream cheese and jam over the bread.
  • Layer the fresh berries over the jam-covered bread.
  • Top with remaining bread slices.
  • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layers.
  • Let the casserole sit for at least 30 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the egg mixture is set.
  • Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use whole milk.
  • You can substitute the fresh berries with frozen ones if desired.
  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less jam.
