Indulge in a creamy, cheesy Potatoes Au Gratin recipe featuring red potatoes, onions, cheddar, and gruyere cheese. Ideal for any meal.

  • 2 ½ pounds red potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ½ cup gruyere cheese, shredded
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Slice the potatoes and onions thinly.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and mustard powder, whisking until smooth.
  • Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
  • Remove from heat and stir in cheddar and gruyere cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Layer half of the potatoes and onions in a greased baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the top. Repeat layers.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the cheese sauce.
  • Use a mandoline slicer for evenly sliced potatoes.
