  • Bolognese Sauce:
    • 1 tbsp olive oil
    • 1 yellow onion, diced
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 1 pound ground beef
    • ½ pound ground pork
    • 28 oz diced tomatoes
    • 2 tbsp tomato paste
    • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
    • ½ tsp dried basil
    • ½ tsp dried oregano
    • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Ricotta Filling:
    • 16 oz ricotta cheese
    • 1 large egg
    • ¼ tsp dried basil
    • Salt, to taste
  • To Assemble the Lasagna:
    • 9 lasagna noodles, uncooked
    • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded and divided
    • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese

Instructions

 

  1. Prepare the Bolognese Sauce:
    • Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Sauté diced onion until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
    • Add ground beef and pork, cooking until browned. Drain excess fat.
    • Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer on low heat for 20-30 minutes.
  2. Make the Ricotta Filling:
    • In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, dried basil, and salt until well combined.
  3. Assemble the Lasagna:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Spread a thin layer of bolognese sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
    • Lay 3 uncooked lasagna noodles on top of the sauce. Spread ⅓ of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by ⅓ of the bolognese sauce. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella on top.
    • Repeat layers two more times, finishing with a layer of noodles, sauce, and the remaining mozzarella. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the top.
    • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  4. Serve:
    • Let the lasagna cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

  • You can prepare the bolognese sauce a day ahead for deeper flavor.
  • Fresh herbs can be substituted for dried basil and oregano for a more vibrant taste.
  • For a richer dish, add a layer of béchamel sauce between the noodles and ricotta filling.
